Drawing Faces with France Van Stone
Learn how to draw faces from one of the best to do it. In her new class, self-taught virtuoso France Van Stone will teach you everything she's learned from decades of drawing the human face, starting with the most basic lines and shapes and building up to the finest details.
Drawing the human face can be intimidating. But it's also deeply rewarding, and anyone can do it. Yes, that includes you!
If you're a true beginner, you'll fall in love with the creative process of drawing a subject that has inspired artists for centuries. If you already love drawing faces, this is your chance to grow by leaps and bounds with France as your guide.
LESSON 1: HAND LOOSE, EYES OPEN
Starting with the basics, France will introduce you to her simple go-to materials for drawing faces. She'll also teach you how to hold your pen or pencil and warm up your hand with fun, relaxing exercises so that you can draw a human face without physical pain. Finally, you'll learn one of the most important skills in drawing: seeing with your eyes, as opposed to with your trickster brain.
Lesson length: ~34m
LESSON 2: SKETCHING THE FACE
Now that your hand is warm and your eyes are open, you're ready to start drawing the face. That first line can be the most daunting, so France will teach you how to get started in a carefree way, staying loose and enjoying every step of the process. This is not about finishing. "Finishing," as France says, "is overrated." This is about starting and making something happen. Working from reference photos, you'll create several rough sketches, and France will show you how she uses a few "sketchy" lines to outline the shape of the face and map out the features.
Lesson length: ~40m
LESSON 3: PUMP UP THE VOLUME, LET THERE BE LIGHT
Now that you have your rough sketch in place, it's time to add volume and light. France will teach you various techniques, including crosshatching, for bringing the face to life on the page. With France as your guide, you'll draw the same reference photo several times to learn how to build up the face, adding volume and highlights, while shedding the need to capture a perfect likeness.
Lesson length: ~59m
LESSON 4: DOS, DON'TS, TIPS & TRICKS
Now that you've built up your confidence in drawing the human face, France will share the myriad dos, don'ts, tips and tricks that she's learned from drawing thousands of faces over decades, with a specific focus on drawing the eyes and nose. With these nuggets of creative wisdom, you will be fully prepared to continue on your own rewarding journey of drawing the human face.
Lesson length: ~34m
France will host a live video Q&A at 12 pm EST on Saturday, May 18, to answer your questions about the class. Don't worry if you can't attend the live broadcast: you will get access to a recording immediately after it's over.
What tools do I need to take this class?
How is this class different than Crosshatching with France Van Stone?
The crosshatching class focuses on one specific, vital skill: crosshatching. Drawing Faces with France Van Stone is much wider ranging. In the class, you'll start with the absolute basics of drawing the face, the very first lines and shapes, and then, over the course of four lessons, you'll build up to the fine details. This is a great practice even if you draw often. With France as your guide, you will strengthen and sharpen your skills, line by line and shape by shape. Drawing Faces is an attempt to convey everything France has learned about drawing faces over decades – and that is a LOT. The course will cover crosshatching along with many other techniques and exercises.
