Creating Light & Shadow with Charlotte Hamilton

Creating Light & Shadow with Charlotte Hamilton

$ 30.00 USD

Portraiture is a dance between light and shadow. In this class, you'll create four different portraits in four different mediums–pencil, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic paint–to deepen your understanding of how light and shadow interplay to add depth, volume and drama to your art. The class comprises 4 video lessons, 1 live video Q&A (recording available after broadcast) and To Do items for each lesson.

Outline

LESSON 1: PENCIL
Learn to see and map out where the light and shadows are on the face. You’ll use pencils of different softness to depict shadows of varying depths and learn how to create a portrait of form and volume while keeping it simple.
Lesson length: 35m

LESSON 2: CHARCOAL
Be prepared to get your hands dirty! In this lesson, you'll block in areas of shadow with charcoal and control your urge to play with the light. You’ll learn that, with charcoal, less is more.
Lesson length: 20m

LESSON 3: WATERCOLOR
In this lesson, you’ll choose one color to create a monochrome portrait in watercolor. You'll learn how to build layers to create form and volume while focusing solely on light and shadow.
Lesson length: 40m

LESSON 4: ACRYLIC PAINT
You'll start your portrait with a pencil sketch, mapping out all the areas of light and shadow. Then you’ll add color with acrylic paints, blocking in the areas of shadow to create volume.
Lesson length: 29m

LIVE Q&A
Charlotte will host a live video Q&A at 12 pm EST on Saturday, March 2, to answer your questions about the class and portraiture in general. Don't worry if you can't attend the live Q&A: you will get access to a recording immediately after it's over.
