In this LIVE online workshop, you'll get in touch with nature, learn how to make natural ink from responsibly sourced materials and create a portrait of a live muse.
Organic artist Dylan Sara will guide you every step of the way and answer any questions you may have, face-to-face, in real time.
The live workshop is on Sunday, April 25, 2021, from 12-4 pm ET.
Hour One: Grounding
Dylan will share his philosophy of organic art-making and how it transformed his artistic practice. You'll also learn about the plants he uses to make natural inks and how to forage safely and responsibly no matter where you live.
Hour Two: Foraging
You'll go a-foraging around your home to source natural ingredients. Whether you live in a rural, urban or suburban setting, you will be able to find materials with which to make natural inks.
Hour Three: Cooking
It's time to cook! From his kitchen, Dylan will guide you through the process of creating natural ink using simple tools and a rapid process.
Hour Four: Drawing Jenell LIVE
In this final hour, you'll use your freshly made ink to create a portrait of a live subject: an extraordinary muse who has inspired portrait artists around the world, Jenell Duhhcid will be joining us in realtime. Dylan will lead the session and share tips on line work, shadow mapping, edge control and more when working with natural ink.

What tools do I need to participate?
- For streaming, access to a web browser and steady internet connection
- For foraging, a sharp knife and/or pruning shears
- For cooking, the following kitchen items will come in handy: pots/pans, an empty clean jar, a funnel, a sieve; knife, cutting board, a fine grater, mortar and pestle; coffee/tea filters or old cloth; lemon and baking soda to play with the ph values of your inks
- For creating, watercolor paper, paint brushes, a dip pen, a graphite pencil, paper towel
